چکیده

We incorporate a renewable resource into an overlapping generations model with standard, well-behaved utility and constant returns production functions. Besides being a factor of production the resource serves as a store of value. We characterize dynamics, efficiency and stability of steady state equilibria, and show that their nature depends on the size of the intertemporal elasticity of substitution in consumption. If that elasticity is at least half, but not exactly one, steady states are saddle points. For the values of elasticity less that one half we use a parametric example to demonstrate the existence of stable equilibria (indeterminacy) and a subcritical flip bifurcation.

Indeterminacy, bifurcations and chaos in an overlapping generations model with negative environmental externalities

We analyze an overlapping generations model where agent’s welfare depends on three goods: leisure, environmental quality and consumption of a private good. We assume that the production process of the private good depletes the natural resource and that the consumption of the private good alleviates the damages due to environmental deterioration. In such context, we show that individuals’ reacti...

Local and global indeterminacy in an overlapping generations model with consumption externalities

We analyze an overlapping generations model where individuals’ wellbeing is negatively affected by the economy-wide average consumption level. Each individual aims at increasing his consumption level relatively to that of the others. We show that this "positional competition" can generate (local and global) indeterminacy and chaos. Local Indeterminacy under Dynamic Efficiency in a Two-sector Overlapping Generations Economy

We consider a two-sector two-periods overlapping generations model with inelastic labor, consumption in both periods of life and homothetic CES preferences. Assuming gross substitutability and a capital intensive consumption good, we prove that when dynamic efficiency holds, local indeterminacy and sunspot fluctuations occur with low enough values for the sectoral elasticities of capital-labor ...

Renewable Resources in an Overlapping Generations Economy without Capital

We incorporate a renewable resource into an overlapping generations model without capital and with quasi-linear preferences. Besides being an input for production the resource serves as a store of value. We characterize the dynamics, efficiency and stability of the steady state equilibria. The stability properties are sensitive to the type of the resource growth. For constant growth there is on...

Krannert School of Management

This paper addresses the e ects of indeterminacy on the volatility of asset prices in a stochastic overlapping generations model with 3-period lived agents. With complete markets, the only indeterminacy is due to the selection of initial conditions for the economy. As with deterministic economies, the equilibrium set converges to the steady state in the long run. With incomplete markets, not on...
